Alstom, a prominent advocate of smart and sustainable mobility, has launched the Low Emission Access to Public Transport (LEAP) program as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. LEAP aims to enhance last-mile connectivity and promote greater usage of public transport. In its pilot phase, the program introduces electric autorickshaws through MetroRide, a AI-powered EV ride-hailing solution, from Yelachenahalli and Indiranagar stations of Bengaluru’s Namma Metro.

In a bid to foster inclusivity in urban mobility, MetroRide has trained approximately 25 women drivers to operate the electric rickshaws in the region. The rides can be booked via the MetroRide app.

The program inauguration saw the presence of Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, along with representatives from WRI India, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited, and other dignitaries. Olivier Loison highlighted the significance of Namma Metro in addressing Bengaluru’s traffic challenges and emphasized the role of LEAP in promoting sustainable mobility.

Bengaluru, known for its congested roads and high private car ownership, faces a significant challenge in providing last-mile connectivity to its metro users. LEAP aims to address this gap by improving access to Bengaluru Metro, particularly for women, while also encouraging their participation as drivers, thereby fostering inclusivity in the transport sector.

Prof. Rajeev Gowda, Vice Chairman of the State Institute for the Transformation of Karnataka, lauded the initiative for empowering women and promoting sustainable transport solutions. Mr. Srinivas Alavilli from WRI India highlighted the program’s commitment to data-driven decision-making and its socio-economic impact, particularly in empowering women driver partners.

WRI India’s involvement includes conducting commuter surveys and facilitating discussions with commuters and auto drivers to ensure the effectiveness of LEAP. Alstom’s partnership with NRSCEL, IIM Bangalore’s incubation center, further demonstrates its commitment to sustainability through initiatives like the Sustainability Incubation Program.

LEAP is poised to expand to other metro stations, with the aim of increasing metro ridership by providing connectivity to high-frequency hubs, thus advancing the adoption of sustainable mobility solutions across India.
