Today, Ashok Leyland, the flagship company of the Hinduja Group and India’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, celebrated a significant milestone by commencing the construction of a state-of-the-art integrated commercial vehicle plant in Uttar Pradesh, focusing on sustainable mobility.
At a ceremony held at the new factory site on Kanpur Road in Lucknow, the Honorable Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Yogi Adityanath, unveiled the Foundation Plaque and laid the Foundation stone. The event was attended by distinguished guests including Shri Suresh Khanna, Minister of Finance & Parliamentary Affairs, and Shri Nand Gopal Gupta, Minister for Industrial Development, Export Promotion, NRI, and Investment Promotion, both from the Government of Uttar Pradesh, along with senior members of the Hinduja family, Ashok Leyland’s dealers, customers, suppliers, and other dignitaries.
Spanning across 70 acres, the greenfield manufacturing facility will be Ashok Leyland’s most advanced and environmentally friendly factory globally, incorporating cutting-edge manufacturing technology to ensure world-class quality standards. The primary focus of the plant will be the production of electric buses, with the flexibility to manufacture other vehicles powered by existing and emerging alternative fuels.
Mr. Dheeraj Hinduja, Executive Chairman of Ashok Leyland, expressed, “The Foundation Stone laying ceremony signifies the dawn of a new era for Ashok Leyland in Uttar Pradesh. Once operational, the facility will significantly contribute to our shared objectives of job creation and promoting sustainable mobility in India. We are committed to driving innovation and setting new standards in green mobility. With this new plant, we are aligning ourselves with future needs and advancing towards our Net Zero emissions targets.”
Mr. Shenu Agarwal, MD & CEO of Ashok Leyland, added, “This facility will not only cater to the increasing demand for electric vehicles but also play a crucial role in the holistic development of the region. Upon commencement of operations, the plant will initially have the capacity to produce 2500 vehicles annually. Ashok Leyland aims to ramp up this capacity to 5000 vehicles per year over the next decade, anticipating the rising demand for electric and other types of vehicles in the foreseeable future.
Ashok Leyland is poised to become a key player in Uttar Pradesh’s electric mobility sector, especially considering the state’s commendable achievement of having the highest number of registered Electric Vehicles (EVs) in India, underscoring the state government’s steadfast commitment to facilitating the shift towards eco-friendly transportation solutions.
The establishment of this plant underscores Ashok Leyland’s strategic initiative, positioning the company as a frontrunner in the green mobility revolution in the state. This facility will be Ashok Leyland’s seventh vehicle manufacturing plant in the country.
