India’s Electric Vehicles Consume Over 270 Million Units Of Electricity In FY 2023-24 (Till November)

In the fiscal year 2023-24, electric vehicles (EVs) made significant strides in electricity consumption, recording a total consumption of approximately 270.37 million units of electricity by November 2023 as per CEA. Notably, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) emerged as the leader among various distribution companies in India, exhibiting the highest consumption in EV charging stations and heavy-duty Power Conditioning Systems (PCS).

MSEDCL of Maharashtra took the lead by consuming a substantial portion of the total electricity utilized by EVs. The figures indicate that MSEDCL’s consumption accounted for around 23% of the total electricity utilized by EVs across different distribution companies nationwide. Following closely behind, the top three performers in this category were BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), Tata Power- Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power- DDL), and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) of Delhi. Collectively, these entities contributed to a significant portion, consuming 121.684 million units of electricity.

Analyzing the distribution, the data suggests that MSEDCL’s dominance is marked by its impressive 23% share, underscoring Maharashtra’s robust presence in the EV sector. Similarly, Delhi-based distribution companies, BRPL, Tata Power- DDL, and BYPL, demonstrated notable shares of 20%, 15%, and 10% of the total electricity consumed by EVs, respectively.

The combined efforts of the top four distribution companies from Maharashtra and Delhi resulted in a substantial 68% share, translating to around 184 million units of electricity consumed by EVs. This collaborative contribution underscores the regional significance of these states in driving the adoption of electric vehicles.

Zooming out to a broader perspective, the top ten distribution companies collectively accounted for a remarkable 91% of the total electricity consumed by EVs, totaling approximately 243.303 million units. This concentration of consumption highlights the influential role played by a select group of distribution companies in shaping the landscape of EV electricity utilization.

Furthermore, the data highlights the top states leading the charge in EV electricity consumption during the specified financial year. Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, and Andhra Pradesh emerged as the frontrunners, emphasizing the growing penetration and adoption of electric vehicles in these regions. In summary, the data showcases the burgeoning impact of electric vehicles on the electricity consumption landscape, with specific distribution companies and states playing pivotal roles in driving this transformative shift toward cleaner and sustainable modes of transportation.
