The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) intends to hire 28 electric vehicles for official use over a five-year period, as part of its ongoing transition towards electric mobility.

Currently utilizing 32 electric cars and five electric bikes allocated in March 2018, the NDMC has initiated a tender for the rental of Tata Nexon EV or equivalent electric vehicles, complete with drivers, at an estimated cost of Rs 3.36 crore.

A representative expressed, “The NDMC is actively embracing electric vehicles for official use, with a goal of systematically transitioning to a fully electric fleet. This initiative is a significant stride in that direction.”

NDMC chairman Amit Yadav, during his budget speech, emphasized the commitment to electric vehicle adoption, highlighting the policy shift and the expansion of charging infrastructure to support sustainability goals.

As per tender specifications, the procured e-vehicles should be no more than one month old, undergo inspection by the Executive Engineer (Mech), and be in optimal mechanical condition for use by senior officers. The electric vehicles must feature modern amenities, and the tender mandates the inclusion of GPS/e-vehicle tracking devices.

Looking ahead, the NDMC plans to acquire electric bikes or scooters in the 2024-25 financial year to facilitate short-distance mobility for field staff. The first phase aims to acquire 100 such vehicles, with detailed plans and associated costs currently under development.
