(Nasdaq: GGR), a leading global technology company specializing in battery swapping ecosystems for sustainable urban mobility solutions, and Far EasTone Telecom, have announced the deployment of their jointly-developed Smart Traffic Signal Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) at nearly 200 of Taipei City’s busiest intersections. This deployment utilizes Gogoro Smart Batteries and follows a successful pilot program conducted in 2022.
Horace Luke, Founder and CEO of Gogoro, emphasized the increasing demand for their smart city energy solutions, extending beyond battery swapping for vehicles. With customers in the region seeking time-shifted energy solutions, such as the Smart Traffic Signal UPS in Taipei City and their Virtual Power Plant partnership with Enel X, Gogoro is addressing various unique energy requirements. Luke stated that time-shifting energy has always been crucial for enabling sustainable transformations, not only in transportation but also in other industries transitioning away from fossil fuels or emerging industries that require alternative energy solutions. Gogoro’s utilization of the second life of their Smart Batteries for diverse smart city energy needs is generating new revenue streams.
Smart Traffic Signal UPS
Gogoro Inc. (Nasdaq: GGR) and Far EasTone Telecom have developed the Smart Traffic Signal UPS, specifically designed for densely populated cities like Taipei City. This innovative system enables uninterrupted operation of traffic intersections, even during severe weather, natural disasters, or power grid outages. Utilizing two Gogoro Smart Batteries that can be easily swapped, the Smart Traffic Signal UPS provides long-term supplemental energy to maintain continuous operation. The system, integrated with the existing traffic signal box, has already been deployed in 25 of Taipei City’s busiest intersections and is set to expand to nearly 200 intersections by the end of the year.
Award-Winning Taipei City Pilot
After a successful pilot in Taipei City, the Smart Traffic Signal UPS developed by Gogoro and Far EasTone has received recognition from the Taipei City government. The innovative system, which ensures normal traffic signal operations during power abnormalities, has been honored with the prestigious “2022 Smart Taipei Innovation Award.” The commercial launch of the Smart Traffic Signal UPS follows the pilot’s success, with its ability to eliminate traffic accidents that would have occurred if the signals were inoperable.
Gogoro Battery Swapping
The Gogoro Network is redefining swappable battery refueling, offering a smart, safe, and adaptable solution that continually optimizes itself. With a vast network spanning over 2,500 locations and 12,000 battery swapping stations, the Gogoro Network supports nearly 550,000 riders and boasts over 1.1 million smart batteries in circulation. Facilitating more than 400,000 daily battery swaps and accumulating over 470 million total battery swaps, Gogoro’s innovative network has already contributed to the reduction of over 700,000 tons of CO2 emissions since its inception.
