The Chandigarh administration has made an announcement stating that registrations of internal combustion engine (ICE) two-wheelers will be halted by July, and four-wheelers by December, for the fiscal year 2023-24.
The objective of this move is to discourage the usage of non-electric vehicles in accordance with the Electric Vehicle Policy 2022 implemented by the UT. The policy aims to achieve a 10% reduction in four-wheelers and a 35% reduction in two-wheelers in the first year, compared to the previous year.
The objectives for the ongoing fiscal year entail a 20% decrease in the number of four-wheelers and a 70% decrease in the number of two-wheelers. The policy sets a limit of 6,202 registrations for non-electric two-wheelers and 22,626 for non-electric four-wheelers in the Union Territory this fiscal year.
As of now, 4,032 two-wheelers have already been registered, which means only 2,170 petrol-run scooters and motorcycles can be registered until March 31, 2024. Similarly, once the targets for this fiscal year are met, registration of fossil-fuel-run four-wheelers will no longer be allowed.
It is anticipated that the target for reducing internal combustion engine (ICE) four-wheelers will be reached by December, whereas the target for ICE two-wheelers is expected to be accomplished by July. Consequently, non-electric two-wheelers or cars will not be eligible for registration in Chandigarh until the next fiscal year, once the Administration’s targets have been accomplished.
