India’s EV Sales Saw Three-Fold Increase In 2021-22, Report

According to a recent report, India’s electric vehicle retail sales saw an increase of three-fold in 2021-22. Also, the sales were dominated by electric three-wheelers among others. The data was gathered from around 1,397 regional transport offices.

India sold 429,217 units during this time period compared to 134,821 units in 2020-21. During 2021-22, 17,802 units were sold of passenger electric vehicles which were 4,984 units in 2020-21.

The EV market was highly dominated by Tata Motors which saw a five-fold increase in its electric car sales. The company sold 15,198 units in the last fiscal which was 3,523 units in 2020-21. MG Motor sold 2,045 units, Mahindra sold 156 electric passenger cars, and Hyundai Motor sold 128 units.

The electric two-wheelers market saw a five-fold rise in 2021-22 with sales of 231,338 units, which during 2020-21 was 41,046 units. Hero Electric sold around 28% of two-wheelers at 65,303 units followed by Okinawa Autotech with 46,447 units and Ampere Vehicles with 24,648 units. Ather Energy sold 19,971 units, and Ola Electric 14,371 units.

Electric three-wheeler saw a two-fold jump in the last fiscal. India sold 177,874 units in 2021-22 compared to 88,391 units in 2020-21. India sold 2,203 commercial electric vehicles in the last fiscal year.
