Chandigarh’s first electric vehicle (EV) policy is set to go into effect on April 1, following a year of negotiations between administration departments and other stakeholders.

In the second week of January, the government will release a draft of the policy, telling people about the long and short-term benefits of acquiring EVs. The policy will have a number of elements to attract residents to make the purchase.

According to sources, in addition to encouraging e-bikes for short distances, one of the primary components of the strategy will be to provide financial incentives for the purchase of EVs. The UT is considering tie-ups with dealers in exchange for an agreement and free registration.

Other concessions are anticipated to include free parking and exemption from road tax. Furthermore, those who purchase electric vehicles during the first year of the policy’s implementation will save more money.

Multiple discussions and debates of a three-member group composed of Crest’s CEO, the municipal commissioner, and the deputy commissioner had taken place in order to make the policy practical, result-oriented, and exciting. In the recent past, this committee had made several recommendations to the administration.

A senior official of the UT stated it as the first-ever EV policy 2022, slated to be implemented on April 1 of the next fiscal year. The main strength will be to promote EVs and urge people to use them so that as many people as possible choose them over fuel-based cars.

Stating that numerous incentives await for people, for those who transition from fuel-powered vehicles, the official expressed that “Good technology-oriented EVs are entering the market. People can choose them with full faith, as they have a long life.”

The regulation will make EV registration for all two, three or four-wheelers, easier and faster by allowing for rapid online registration. Aside from other difficulties, minimizing pollution in the city is a critical aspect of enacting the programme.
