The transport department of Delhi has selected 6 manufacturers of electric kits for converting old diesel and petrol vehicles into electric vehicles. The vehicles included here are ones that cannot ply on the roads of the city. The transport department is in talks with more manufacturers and will select others in the next few days.
All the 6 manufacturers are accepted by the leading research and development, and testing certification agency, International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT).
One of the manufacturers of this is Etrio Automobile and its electric kits are useful for old four-wheelers (both petrol and diesel). Etrio has a 17.3 kW battery with a range of around 106 km.
Other manufacturers empanelled are 3EV Industries, Zero 21 Renewable Energy Solutions, VELEV Motors India Pvt Ltd, and Booma Innovative Transport Solutions Renewable.
All the manufacturers with variant battery capacity have electric kits for four, three, and two-wheelers with both the fuel types. Booma with a range of around 65.68 Km provides a battery capacity of 2.016 kW for two-wheelers.
A government official said, “We are going to have a hackathon in coming days to bring in more electric kit manufacturers on board to expand this retrofitting market for conversion of petrol and diesel vehicles into electric ones.”
There are around 1.5 lakh diesel vehicles in Delhi that have completed 10 years duration and 28 lakh petrol vehicles that have completed 15 years.
Delhi government will deregister all these vehicles in compliance with the direction of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on 1st January 2022. The government will also issue no-objection certificates (NOC) for these vehicles to get re-registered in other parts of the country.
It will cost around Rs 3-5 lakh for retrofitting old petrol and diesel four-vehicles depending on the range and battery capacity. The retrofitting cost of two and three-wheelers will be less comparatively.
