Hyundai Motor Company proudly announces that its XCIENT Fuel Cell electric heavy-duty trucks have achieved a groundbreaking milestone, surpassing a cumulative driving distance of 10 million kilometers in the Swiss fleet. This achievement underscores the reliability and endurance of Hyundai’s world-class hydrogen fuel cell technology, marking a significant advancement in sustainable transportation.

Since the commencement of fleet operations in Switzerland in October 2020, the XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks have achieved this remarkable feat in just three years and eight months. Currently, 48 XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks are operational in Switzerland, powered by two 90-kW fuel cell systems and a 350 kW e-motor, providing a maximum range of over 400 km on a single charge.

Compared to conventional diesel trucks, which would emit approximately 6,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide over the same accumulated distance, the XCIENT Fuel Cell electric trucks offer a substantial reduction in carbon emissions. This reduction is equivalent to the annual carbon absorption of approximately 700,000 pine trees or the creation of a pine forest covering 508 hectares.

Operating solely on ‘green hydrogen,’ produced without emitting carbon, the XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks contribute to the establishment of an eco-friendly hydrogen value chain in Europe. Hyundai Motor’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond vehicle production; the company is actively involved in the creation of a commercial hydrogen ecosystem, encompassing production, charging infrastructure, and consumption of hydrogen.

At CES 2024, Hyundai Motor announced the expansion of HTWO, its hydrogen fuel cell system brand, to serve as the entire hydrogen value chain business brand for the Hyundai Group. This strategic move aims to accelerate the transition to a hydrogen society by facilitating the production, storage, transportation, and utilization of hydrogen across various sectors.

By leveraging insights from vehicle data on mileage, hydrogen consumption, and fuel cell stack performance gathered during this milestone, Hyundai Motor is poised to further enhance its hydrogen fuel cell technology and expand its application to diverse vehicle types.

Hyundai’s XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks stand at the forefront of sustainable mobility, driving innovation and shaping the future of transportation towards a greener, hydrogen-powered world.
