The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), under the Decarbonization Challenge Fund of the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), has initiated efforts to promote sustainable transport solutions in Naroda GIDC, Ahmedabad, with the deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) for industrial operations.

As part of the initiative, the Naroda Industries Association (NIA), with support from TERI, unveiled a fleet of electric vehicles at the Naroda Industrial Estate on 11 March 2026. The deployment includes two electric dumpers for door-to-door waste collection and one small electric commercial vehicle for maintenance activities.

The initiative follows a detailed study conducted by TERI assessing transport patterns and challenges within the industrial estate. The study recommended measures such as vehicle electrification, improved traffic management, enhanced public transport connectivity, and development of EV charging infrastructure.

The newly deployed EVs are expected to reduce approximately 5 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, with total emissions savings rising to around 6.5 tonnes per year as the vehicles are powered by solar energy.

The project has also contributed to wider EV adoption within the estate, with nearly 130 electric vehicles—both passenger and commercial—introduced by industries over the past year.

Officials from NIA, the Gujarat Cleaner Production Center, and TERI jointly flagged off the vehicles, highlighting the importance of collaboration between industry bodies and research institutions in advancing clean mobility.

Industry representatives noted that the initiative has not only reduced emissions but also delivered operational savings in fuel and maintenance costs, while building momentum for further measures such as EV charging infrastructure and intra-estate electric shuttle services.

Experts emphasized that although emissions reductions from individual projects may appear modest, localized interventions across industrial clusters can collectively play a significant role in improving air quality and accelerating the transition to low-carbon transport systems.
