BMW M GmbH has announced the beginning of a new era for its high-performance division, revealing plans to introduce fully electric BMW M models from 2027, setting new benchmarks in performance, technology, and driving dynamics.
Unveiled in Munich, the next-generation electric BMW M vehicles will be built on the brand’s Neue Klasse platform and will feature an advanced BMW M eDrive system with four electric motors—one powering each wheel. According to BMW M, this configuration will deliver unprecedented levels of traction, control, and responsiveness, both on public roads and racetracks.
Franciscus van Meel, Managing Director of BMW M GmbH, said the upcoming models will redefine the high-performance segment by combining the brand’s motorsport DNA with cutting-edge electric mobility. He added that the new generation aims to offer “racetrack-ready driving dynamics for everyday use.”
A key highlight of the new architecture is the integration of BMW’s “Heart of Joy” central computing system, part of a network of four high-performance onboard computers, or “Superbrains.” These systems will manage driving dynamics, automated driving functions, infotainment, and comfort features, enabling faster data processing, improved vehicle responsiveness, and over-the-air upgrades.
The electric powertrain will be supported by a performance-optimised high-voltage battery with more than 100 kWh of usable energy and 800-volt charging technology, enabling longer range, faster charging, and higher sustained power output. BMW said the battery will also serve as a structural element of the vehicle, improving overall rigidity and handling.
To further enhance sustainability, BMW M will introduce natural fibre components in its electric high-performance models for the first time. Developed through years of motorsport research, the material offers similar strength to carbon fibre while reducing CO₂ emissions during production by approximately 40 percent.
BMW M stated that the new electric lineup will retain the emotional appeal of its combustion-powered predecessors through simulated gear shifts, distinctive sound design, and multiple driving modes tailored for performance enthusiasts.
With this announcement, BMW M positions itself at the forefront of electric high-performance engineering, signaling a major transformation in how sports cars will deliver speed, precision, and driving pleasure in the electric age.
