Maruti Suzuki India Limited announced that the WagonR has surpassed a major production milestone of 35 lakh units, becoming one of the few passenger vehicles in the country to achieve this feat. The cumulative production milestone spans three generations of the popular hatchback since its launch in India in December 1999.
With this achievement, the WagonR joins Maruti Suzuki’s Alto and Swift in the elite club of models that have crossed the 35 lakh production mark in India. The WagonR is currently manufactured at the company’s production facilities in Gurugram and Manesar, Haryana.
Calling the milestone a reflection of enduring customer trust, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said the achievement goes beyond numbers. He noted that it is rare for a model to enjoy sustained acceptance even after 25 years of its introduction. According to Takeuchi, the WagonR has consistently evolved with changing customer expectations by adopting new technologies and features, while retaining its original DNA of practicality, spaciousness, and fuel efficiency.
“The WagonR’s iconic tall-boy design, roomy interiors, and efficiency have resonated strongly with Indian families over generations. We are deeply grateful to our customers for their continued support and remain committed to delivering the ‘Joy of Mobility’ for years to come,” he said.
The WagonR’s legacy extends beyond India. Suzuki first introduced the WagonR in Japan in September 1993 as a semi-bonnet style mini wagon, where it quickly gained popularity for its comfort and ease of use. Over the years, the model has been manufactured in multiple markets including Japan, India, Hungary, and Indonesia, and is currently sold in more than 75 countries and regions worldwide. In August 2025, the Suzuki WagonR crossed cumulative global sales of one crore units.
In India, the WagonR has steadily evolved while maintaining its core strengths of space and comfort. The latest generation is built on Suzuki’s fifth-generation HEARTECT platform and comes equipped with six airbags as standard. Safety features include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Electronic Stability Program (ESP).
The model also offers a range of comfort and convenience features such as a 7-inch SmartPlay Studio touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice command functionality.
Notably, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR has been India’s highest-selling car for the last four consecutive financial years, according to industry data, underlining its continued relevance and popularity in a highly competitive market.
With the 35 lakh production milestone, Maruti Suzuki has further cemented the WagonR’s status as one of India’s most successful and enduring automotive nameplates.
