The Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India, convened a Chintan Shivir on “Alternate and Emerging Technologies in E-Motors” on 5 December 2025 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, bringing together industry leaders, researchers and innovation stakeholders to accelerate advancements in next-generation electric motor systems.
The event saw participation from technology experts, academic and research organisations, and representatives from the electric mobility industry. Speakers and panelists engaged in discussions, expert presentations and interactive sessions focused on advancing cleaner and more energy-efficient E-Motor technologies and strengthening India’s sustainable mobility transition.
Deliberations during the Shivir centred on breakthrough innovations, emerging trends and supply chain resilience for electric motor systems. Discussions also explored self-reliance, indigenous capability development and the scope of alternate motor architectures. Technologies covered during the technical sessions included Induction Motors, Switched Reluctance Motors (SRMs), Wound-Field Synchronous Motors (WFSMs), Permanent-Magnet-Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motors (PMA-SRMs), and motors based on ferrite and other non-rare-earth magnet materials.
A roadmap outlining segment-specific priorities for alternate motor solutions across two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, buses and commercial automobiles was presented. The framework identified short-, medium- and long-term technology pathways based on cost considerations, maturity levels and performance requirements.
Speaking at the event, Shri Kamran Rizvi, Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, said the objective of the Chintan Shivir extends beyond addressing critical material supply challenges. He emphasised that India must work towards developing next-generation motors that are lighter, energy-efficient, cost-competitive and environmentally sustainable. He further noted that such innovation is key to positioning India as a global leader in the emerging electric mobility landscape.
The session concluded with a shared commitment among participants, industry bodies, R&D institutions and stakeholders to collaborate and accelerate progress in electric motor technology development. The Chintan Shivir is seen as a step toward building a resilient and future-ready automotive ecosystem aligned with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
