Global battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) announced an ambitious multi-dimensional growth roadmap aimed at accelerating the world’s transition to clean energy and electrified mobility. Marking a decade since the Paris Agreement, the company highlighted major advancements in EV battery technology, business models, and circular energy ecosystems.
According to CATL, China’s “New Trio” — electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries, and photovoltaic cells — have become central to the country’s export growth. Between January and September 2025, lithium-ion battery exports alone reached nearly RMB 400 billion, with CATL contributing almost 120 GWh, nearly 60% of China’s total battery exports.
Backed by over RMB 80 billion in cumulative R&D investment, CATL has now secured nearly 50,000 global patents. The company emphasized that its latest EV battery technologies, including the fourth- and fifth-generation LFP batteries and advancements in ternary systems like Qilin and Freevoy, deliver higher energy density, longer lifecycles, and enhanced safety. CATL’s newly launched “Naxtra” sodium-ion battery, designed for colder regions, reduces dependence on lithium and offers improved low-temperature performance.
CATL reported that its batteries have powered more than 20 million EVs worldwide, helping reduce an estimated 14 million tons of CO₂ annually.
The company outlined four strategic pillars for future growth:
1. Scaling Breakthrough Technologies
CATL is pushing advancements in LFP systems, sodium-ion cells, and all-solid-state batteries. Its modular “Freevoy” dual-power battery allows tailored combinations for diverse EV requirements.
2. Expanding Electrification Beyond Automobiles
CATL batteries now power commercial EVs, electric ships, and low-altitude aircraft. Nearly 900 electric vessels are currently operating with CATL battery systems. The company’s two-ton eVTOL has obtained major regulatory certifications and is progressing toward operational clearance.
3. Reinventing Energy Services with Battery Swapping
CATL’s battery-swapping initiative is expanding rapidly. The “Choco-Swap Alliance” now covers 45 cities, with 1,000 swapping stations expected by year-end and a long-term target of 30,000 stations worldwide. The recently launched “People’s Great Car,” developed with JD.com and GAC Group, features CATL’s high-temperature-resistant battery compatible with future solid-state upgrades.
4. Building a Zero-Carbon Industrial Ecosystem
CATL is developing integrated wind–solar–storage parks in Sichuan, Fujian, Hainan, and Shandong. The company’s battery recycling efficiency now leads the world, with recovery rates of 99.6% for nickel, cobalt, and manganese, and 96.5% for lithium. Through the Global Energy Circularity Commitment (GECC), CATL aims to accelerate global transition to circular energy systems.
CATL concluded by urging industry stakeholders to collaborate in steering the global new-energy transition from rapid expansion to comprehensive, high-quality growth. The company reaffirmed its commitment to innovation-driven electrification and a zero-carbon future.
