In a major stride toward next-generation electric mobility, Toyota Motor Corporation and Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. have entered into a joint development agreement to mass-produce cathode materials for all-solid-state batteries — a breakthrough technology set to redefine the future of electric vehicles (EVs).
The partnership marks a significant milestone in Toyota’s mission to achieve carbon neutrality and its “Beyond Zero” vision, which seeks not only to eliminate emissions but also to create positive environmental value.
Powering the Future of BEVs
All-solid-state batteries, composed of a solid electrolyte, anode, and cathode, promise higher output, longer lifespan, and faster charging times than conventional liquid-electrolyte lithium-ion batteries. Toyota aims to integrate these advanced batteries into its battery electric vehicles (BEVs) with a market launch targeted for 2027–2028.
Since 2021, both companies have been conducting joint research to overcome technical challenges such as cathode degradation during repeated charge-discharge cycles. Leveraging Sumitomo Metal Mining’s proprietary powder synthesis technology, the collaboration has successfully developed a highly durable cathode material optimized for all-solid-state battery applications.
With over 20 years of expertise in producing cathode materials for electric vehicles, Sumitomo Metal Mining now plans to transition this newly developed material into mass production, supporting Toyota’s next wave of battery innovation.
A Leap Toward Carbon Neutrality
Both companies will continue advancing efforts to enhance performance, safety, and cost-efficiency of cathode materials, paving the way for the world’s first practical application of all-solid-state batteries in commercial BEVs.
The collaboration underscores Toyota’s ongoing pursuit of a carbon-neutral society — aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in areas such as affordable clean energy, industry innovation, and global partnerships.
Toyota’s “Beyond Zero” Vision
Under its Beyond Zero philosophy, Toyota aims not just to reduce environmental impact but to add new value through technologies that improve life and mobility. The initiative emphasizes a balance between innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity, reflecting Toyota’s broader transformation from a traditional automaker into a mobility company that delivers happiness and freedom of movement for all.
As the race toward advanced EV battery technology intensifies globally, Toyota and Sumitomo Metal Mining’s alliance could mark a turning point — positioning Japan at the forefront of the solid-state battery revolution that could redefine the range, efficiency, and durability of future electric vehicles.
