Volvo Buses’ long-standing bodybuilding partner MCV has officially inaugurated a brand-new manufacturing facility dedicated to producing complete electric buses for European markets. The state-of-the-art plant, located outside Cairo, was formally opened on September 16 in the presence of top executives from Volvo Buses and MCV, alongside officials from Sweden and Egypt.

Spanning 10,000 square meters, the plant has been built in just 12 months and is designed to meet the highest global quality and production standards. It will manufacture the Volvo 7900 Electric and Electric Articulated city buses, as well as the Volvo 8900 Electric for city and intercity routes. The first rollouts from the new facility are expected this fall.

MCV began producing Volvo’s complete electric buses in 2024, even while the new plant was under construction, with the first deliveries already reaching customers in Europe. The new facility significantly increases production capacity and enhances flexibility to adapt buses to the specific requirements of different European operators.

Anna Westerberg, President of Volvo Buses, highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership: The business model to collaborate with body builders for the bus body is well established in many key markets around the world. With an extended partnership with MCV, we can maintain and reinforce our standards of quality, safety, and sustainability.

Founded in 1995 by Eng. Karim Ghabbour, MCV has been a trusted Volvo partner in the UK and other markets for over 15 years. The company’s headquarters are located in Obour, with additional production sites in El Salheya El Gedida, both in the Cairo metropolitan area.

The new facility further cements Volvo Buses’ commitment to sustainable passenger transport and its ambition to scale up electric mobility solutions in Europe.
