India’s electric vehicle sector registered strong growth in the fiscal year 2024–25, and this is now clearly visible in the country’s electricity consumption patterns. According to recent data from the Central Electricity Authority, electric vehicles consumed 100.18 million units of electricity in April 2025 alone. This sharp rise in consumption reflects the growing number of EVs on Indian roads and also highlights the growing pressure on the country’s electricity distribution system. Compared to the month of March 2025, consumption increased by more than 17.86 percent, showing the pace at which the sector is expanding.

Among the states, Maharashtra stood at the top, with its distribution company MSEDCL supplying the largest share of power to electric vehicles in April. It contributed 16.44 percent of the total electricity used by EVs. Karnataka came second, with BESCOM providing 15.94 percent, which equals nearly 15.97 million units of electricity. In Delhi, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited accounted for 12.5 percent of the EV electricity consumption. Other Delhi-based discoms such as BSES Rajdhani and BSES Yamuna also played an important role in powering the capital’s growing fleet of EVs.

The contribution of private and state-run companies was also significant. Adani Electricity in Mumbai and Pashchimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (PVVNL) in Uttar Pradesh were among the major utilities supplying electricity for EV charging. Together, the top ten distribution companies provided around 79.6 million units, which accounts for nearly 75.53 percent of the total electricity consumed by EVs across the country during the month. When extended to the top 15 distribution companies, the figure rises to 89.86 percent. This shows that India’s largest and most urban-focused discoms are currently carrying the bulk of the load in supporting electric mobility.

At the same time, other states are beginning to show faster adoption. Gujarat has reported rising electricity use by EVs, supported by new charging stations and government incentives. States such as Telangana, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, and Kerala are also experiencing higher EV power consumption. This indicates that the electric vehicle movement is expanding beyond the larger metro regions and is slowly spreading into other parts of the country.

As the number of EVs continues to increase, the demand for reliable and accessible charging infrastructure is becoming more urgent. This transition calls for continued investment by distribution companies and private players, along with steady support from government policies. With these efforts, India can ensure that its move towards electric mobility stays on track, helping to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and lower pollution levels while making clean transportation accessible to more people across the country.
