North Carolina is fast becoming a national hub for electric vehicle (EV) innovation and manufacturing, with more than $20.4 billion in private investments and 16,300 jobs created across the state’s EV supply chain. The transformation was spotlighted at the “Powering Prosperity” event, hosted at the IONNA Apex Rechargery by the Electrification Coalition.

Regional leaders, policymakers, and industry experts gathered to emphasize how the EV industry is reshaping North Carolina’s economy. They highlighted the state’s growing role in EV manufacturing, battery production, supply chain development, and workforce training — all of which are positioning it as a key player in America’s clean transportation future.

“China has been outpacing us, but it’s not too late for the U.S. to lead,” said Ben Prochazka, Executive Director of the Electrification Coalition, stressing the importance of swift action and strong policy support. “North Carolina has shown what’s possible by attracting industry from all sides of the spectrum.”

Speakers pointed out not only the environmental benefits of EV adoption but also the economic advantages, such as lower ownership costs, export potential, and revitalization of underutilized spaces like the Apex Rechargery, which was converted from a former gas station.

“Embracing the EV industry allows North Carolina to be a national and global leader in clean transportation,” said Joanna Helms, Economic Development Director of Apex, underlining the state’s international trade potential in EV and battery exports.

The event forms part of the Freedom to Drive summer series, which showcases how EV investments are driving economic development in U.S. communities.

As North Carolina accelerates its shift toward electrification, industry experts believe the state’s success story can serve as a model for other regions — combining environmental sustainability with economic prosperity.
