Volvo Cars is gearing up to produce the next big name in electric mobility—the Polestar 7—at its upcoming state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Kosice, Slovakia. Announced on July 3, 2025, Volvo Cars and Polestar have entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop and manufacture the premium all-electric compact SUV, targeted for launch in 2028.

The Polestar 7 is set to become the second vehicle manufactured at the Kosice facility, following a forthcoming next-generation Volvo model yet to be unveiled. The model promises to uphold Polestar’s signature design and performance while leveraging the advanced shared technology platform used across Volvo’s next-gen lineup, including the Volvo EX60.

Advanced Engineering Meets Scandinavian Synergy
The Polestar 7 will feature:

  • Mega casting and cell-to-body battery architecture
  • Next-gen Volvo e-motors, developed in-house
  • Enhanced battery density for better range and performance
  • A shared software and cloud infrastructure based on Volvo’s Superset tech stack, ensuring OTA updates and long-term feature growth

Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars, emphasized the strategic nature of the collaboration: This partnership builds on the success of our joint efforts on Polestar 2 and 3, leveraging synergies to deliver exceptional vehicles tailored to distinct market needs.

Kosice: Volvo’s Green Mobility Cornerstone in Europe
The Kosice plant, Volvo’s third European facility, is being developed with a focus on sustainability. Fully climate-neutral and dedicated to EV-only production, the site represents a €1.2 billion investment and will contribute significantly to the region’s economy with capacity for 250,000 vehicles per year and the creation of thousands of jobs.

By situating the plant in Slovakia, Volvo strengthens its European manufacturing triangle alongside Ghent (Belgium) and Torslanda (Sweden)—ensuring robust supply chain access and market coverage.

While the MoU is currently non-binding and subject to final agreements, both companies have expressed strong intent to bring Polestar 7 to life through shared innovation and sustainable practices. The development not only marks a significant milestone for Polestar’s evolving lineup but also reaffirms Volvo Cars’ ambitious journey toward full electrification and net-zero emissions by 2040.
