India’s electric vehicle sector saw impressive growth in the fiscal year 2024–25, leading to a noticeable change in the country’s electricity consumption pattern. According to recent data from the Central Electricity Authority, electric vehicles in India used 85 million units of electricity in March 2025 alone. This rise in consumption shows the increasing number of EVs on Indian roads and also points to the growing pressure and changes needed in the country’s electricity distribution system. Compared to the previous month, EV electricity consumption increased by more than 2 percent.

Maharashtra’s power distribution company, MSEDCL, supplied the largest share of electricity to EVs in March, contributing 18.84% of the total. Karnataka’s BESCOM came next, providing 16.98%, which equals about 14.43 million units of electricity. In Delhi, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited supplied 12.82% of the electricity used by EVs. Other Delhi-based providers such as BSES Rajdhani and BSES Yamuna also played key roles in supporting the capital’s growing number of electric vehicles.

Apart from these, major utilities like Adani Electricity in Mumbai and Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Limited in Gujarat made important contributions. Distributors across Maharashtra, including BEST, delivered a total of 64.01 million units of electricity for EV use in March. This combined amount makes up around 75.31% of the total electricity consumed by EVs across India that month. The figures show that states with strong urban centers, better charging networks, and proactive EV policies are leading in the shift toward electric mobility.

Overall, the top ten electricity distribution companies in the country provided 81.96% of the electricity used by EVs. This shows how important these major power companies are in supporting India’s move towards cleaner transport.

Other states are also catching up. Gujarat is seeing increased EV use, helped by more charging stations and government support. Telangana, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, and Kerala are also reporting higher power consumption by EVs. This indicates that the electric vehicle movement is spreading to more regions of the country.

As EV numbers continue to grow, the need for reliable and widespread charging infrastructure becomes more urgent. Continued investment and supportive government policies will be key to keeping the transition to clean mobility on track, reducing the country’s use of fossil fuels, and lowering pollution levels.
