In a bold leap forward for urban electric mobility, Free2move, a global leader in mobility solutions, has officially launched its innovative partnership with Ample, introducing modular battery swapping technology to Madrid’s thriving car-sharing market. The project features a fleet of Fiat 500e vehicles, seamlessly integrated with Ample’s swappable battery packs, enabling full recharges in under five minutes.

The collaboration offers a transformative alternative to conventional EV charging infrastructure, enhancing fleet uptime, reducing operational costs, and supporting the city’s ambitious emissions reduction targets—65% by 2030—as well as Spain’s national goal of 5.5 million EVs on roads by the same year.

Revolutionizing Urban Car-Sharing Efficiency

This initiative rolled out with an initial fleet of 40 Ample-enabled Fiat 500e vehicles in late 2024, with plans to scale up to 100 units by mid-2025 following successful homologation. These EVs interact directly with Ample’s autonomous swapping stations, where battery exchange is fully automated and app-driven—swapping out a depleted battery for a fully charged one in less time than a fuel stop.

Ample’s drop-in modular battery packs are designed for universal compatibility, supporting multiple EV platforms, including those within the Stellantis family.

For car-sharing fleets, every minute spent off the road is lost revenue,” said Khaled Hassounah, CEO of Ample. “Our 5-minute battery swaps eliminate charging downtime entirely, helping Free2move keep vehicles available, customers moving, and operations running at full speed.

Stellantis and FIAT Drive Innovation

The collaboration is further bolstered by Stellantis Ventures and Free2move Charge, who are leveraging data from this pilot to explore larger-scale adoption of battery-swapping solutions across global markets. As part of the rollout, MOVE 2025 — the world’s leading sustainable mobility event held from June 18–19 at ExCeL London — will feature a live demo of Ample’s swapping system at Booth 1, Main Entrance.

We are proud to take a bold step forward in electric mobility, said Ahmed Mhiri, CEO of Free2move. While the customer experience remains seamless, this advancement allows our teams to operate more efficiently and sustainably.

Our partnership with Ample addresses the urgent need for scalable, sustainable EV infrastructure in urban areas,” added Mathilde Lheureux, Global Head of Energy and Charge at Stellantis.

A Model for Scalable, Sustainable Mobility

With Madrid setting the pace for EV adoption in Spain, this partnership highlights how technology, sustainability, and user experience can converge to redefine mobility in cities. By reducing EV downtime and dependency on fixed charging points, Ample’s modular battery-swapping model emerges as a scalable, high-availability solution tailor-made for fleet-based mobility services.

This rollout positions Free2move and Stellantis as pioneers in operationalizing fast, flexible electric mobility, reinforcing their long-term commitment to sustainable innovation.
