BMW is celebrating 50 years of its iconic Art Car legacy by merging cutting-edge hydrogen technology with contemporary art at Art Basel 2025, through a bold new collaboration with acclaimed artist Alvaro Barrington. Titled “Simply, 2025,” Barrington’s custom wrap transforms BMW’s iX5 Hydrogen VIP car fleet into a fleet of moving artworks that blur the lines between mobility, culture, and artistic expression.

The collaboration marks the second consecutive year BMW’s hydrogen fleet has featured at Art Basel, following a visually striking debut in 2024 with artist Es Devlin. This year, under the guidance of Hans Ulrich Obrist – former BMW Art Car juror and co-curator of the project – Barrington brings his unique, collage-based visual language to the streets of Basel, encapsulating both the emotional resonance and sustainable potential of future mobility.

Art in Motion: Hydrogen Meets Humanity

Barrington, whose practice spans painting, textiles, and multimedia, drew inspiration from artists and cultural icons known for reinvention, including David Hockney, Tina Turner, Henri Matisse, and Richard Hamilton. His wrap for the iX5 Hydrogen fleet captures the spirit of transformation and forward-thinking design, showcasing a fusion of vivid colors, layered textures, and cultural motifs.

Through deep engagement with BMW’s hydrogen engineers, Barrington created a visual narrative that intertwines technology with emotion, nature with innovation. His art doesn’t just decorate the cars—it tells a story of evolving mobility, encouraging viewers to see sustainable transportation not only as a necessity, but also as an expression of identity and joy.

Driving culture is one of the most important cultures in the world,” said Barrington. “It’s really interesting to be part of this conversation about sustainability and the future of cars that BMW and the rest of the world is having.

BMW’s Hydrogen Vision: Innovation Beyond the Canvas

BMW’s presence at Art Basel reaffirms its commitment to innovation, luxury, and environmental responsibility. The iX5 Hydrogen is more than a prototype—it’s a preview of what’s to come. After successful global testing, BMW will begin series production of its first hydrogen-powered vehicle in 2028, integrating hydrogen fuel cell technology as a complement to its electric, plug-in hybrid, and ICE lineups.

The collaboration with Alvaro Barrington amplifies our pioneering fuel-cell technology through the lens of art,” said Michael Rath, Head of Hydrogen Vehicles, BMW Group. “We are firmly committed to launching our first hydrogen-powered vehicle in 2028.

The fleet, which also includes the fully electric BMW i7, will serve VIP guests during the fair, combining contemporary luxury with sustainable mobility in a uniquely artistic experience.

Global Movement: The BMW Art Car Tour Continues

Earlier in 2025, BMW showcased its artistic mobility concept at Stockholm’s Market Art Fair, where German artist Gregor Hildebrandt wrapped BMW i5 and i7 models in his signature style. With more art collaborations planned throughout the BMW Art Car World Tour, the brand continues to position itself at the intersection of creativity, technology, and mobility.
