In a landmark achievement for General Motors, the company has surged to become the second-largest electric vehicle (EV) seller in the U.S., propelled by strong demand for the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV. With over 62,000 EVs sold through May, GM now boasts a formidable 15.5% share of the U.S. EV market — more than double its position a year ago.

The Chevrolet brand is leading the charge, surpassing Ford to become the fastest-growing domestic EV brand in the first quarter of 2025. Year to date, Chevrolet has sold more than 37,000 EVs in the U.S., compared to Ford’s 34,000. The Equinox EV, praised for its affordability and practical design, is at the heart of this surge in sales.

GM’s expansive EV lineup includes popular models such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, GMC HUMMER EV, and Cadillac’s luxury flagship Escalade IQ. May marked GM’s second-best month ever for EV sales, following a staggering 94% year-over-year growth in Q1.

“Customers are responding in record numbers to our world-class portfolio of electric and gas-powered vehicles,” said Rory Harvey, executive vice president and president of global markets. “In just the first two months of Q2, we’ve more than doubled our EV sales compared to the same period last year.”

Beyond vehicle sales, GM continues to enhance EV ownership through robust charging infrastructure. Over 250,000 public chargers are now accessible to GM drivers across North America. In collaboration with EVgo Inc. and Pilot Company, fast-charging stations are now operational at more than 130 locations in over 25 states. Additionally, GM’s involvement in the Ionna joint venture with seven other automakers aims to establish 30,000 new charging bays by 2030.
