Volvo Cars marked a major milestone today as its Ghent manufacturing plant officially began production of the fully electric EX30, one of Europe’s best-selling EVs in 2024. The move reflects the Swedish automaker’s strategic push to meet surging local demand while strengthening its position in the premium electric vehicle market.
The EX30, introduced in late 2023, has seen strong consumer interest and will now be locally produced in Belgium, with the EX30 Cross Country variant also scheduled for production later this year.
Volvo has invested approximately EUR 200 million in the Ghent plant to prepare for EX30 production. The upgrades include a brand-new car platform, nearly 600 new or refurbished robots, a new battery pack assembly line, door production systems, and an expanded battery hall.
“The EX30 is crucial for us as we continue to strengthen our position in the premium EV market in Europe,” said Francesca Gamboni, Chief Manufacturing and Supply Chain Officer for Volvo Cars. “Investing in the European production of the EX30 in Ghent perfectly aligns with our long-held strategy to build our cars where they sell best.”
The expansion brings approximately 350 new jobs to the Ghent facility, pushing total employment to nearly 6,600 people. According to Volvo, the swift rollout of EX30 production in Ghent—achieved in record time—demonstrates the plant’s capacity for agility and innovation.
“Thanks to the engagement and collaboration of the entire Ghent team, we cut the industrialisation time in half,” said Stefan Fesser, Manager of the Volvo Car plant in Ghent. “We are extremely proud to welcome the EX30.”
Located near the Port of Ghent, the facility is Volvo’s only fully developed car factory in Belgium and one of two in Europe, alongside the Torslanda plant in Sweden. A third plant is currently under construction in Slovakia.
The Ghent plant also manufactures the fully electric EX40 and EC40, as well as hybrid variants of the XC40 and V60. In 2024 alone, it produced over 186,000 vehicles. With the addition of the EX30, Volvo now produces 10 electric and hybrid models across its European facilities.
The EX30’s local production not only enhances Volvo’s flexible global footprint but also aligns with the European Union’s sustainability and competitiveness goals—promoting green innovation while generating high-skilled employment.
