In a groundbreaking move towards decarbonizing the construction industry, Volvo Trucks, in collaboration with Putzmeister and at the request of long-standing partner Swerock, has unveiled the world’s first fully battery-electric truck-mounted concrete pump. The innovative vehicle was presented at Bauma, one of the world’s leading trade fairs for construction machinery.
This pioneering solution marks a major advancement in the electrification of construction transport, offering a zero-exhaust emission, low-noise alternative to traditional diesel-powered concrete pumps. The electric pump truck is capable of driving up to 50 kilometers and then pumping approximately 50 cubic meters of concrete without the need for recharging. For larger operations or extended travel, a Combined Charging System (CCS) can be set up on-site, allowing the truck to charge while simultaneously pumping concrete.
“Volvo Trucks is the innovator when it comes to new technologies in combination with electric trucks,” said Christoph Fitz, Head of Sales at Volvo Trucks in Germany. “This all-electric boom pump truck showcases our commitment to sustainable solutions for the construction segment.”
A Complete Electric Concrete Solution
This innovation enables Volvo to offer a fully electric workflow for concrete handling — from transporting, to mixing, to pumping — redefining how construction sites can operate in urban and environmentally sensitive areas.
The vehicle is built on the Volvo FM Electric 8×4 Rigid Tag Tridem chassis and is equipped with:
- Two electric motors delivering a continuous output of 330 kW, paired with Volvo’s signature I-Shift gearbox
- A custom energy storage system with four batteries and a total capacity of 360 kWh (250 kWh usable)
- Charging capabilities up to 250 kW DC and 43 kW AC, including the ability to charge during operation
- A total vehicle weight of 32 tonnes
A Step Toward Fully Decarbonized Construction
Volvo Trucks began series production of electric trucks in 2019 and now leads the global electric truck market, boasting a 50% market share in Europe, a strong foothold in North America, and over 4,900 electric truck deliveries worldwide. This new electric boom pump truck further expands Volvo’s electric portfolio for the construction sector, which already includes cement mixers, tippers, cranes, and hook lifts. With this innovation, Volvo Trucks continues to cement its position as a leader in sustainable heavy-duty transport.
