India’s electric mobility sector has achieved a major milestone, surpassing one million electric vehicle (EV) sales in the financial year 2024-25. This accomplishment marks a significant leap toward the country’s goal of cleaner, greener, and self-reliant transportation, in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Net Zero emissions by 2070 and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

According to the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), the total number of EVs sold in FY25 stood at 11,49,334 electric two-wheelers (e-2W) and 1,59,235 electric three-wheelers (L5 category), reflecting an annual growth of 21% and 57%, respectively, compared to FY24. The surge is attributed to sustained government policy support and the growing acceptance of EVs across the country.

PM E-DRIVE Scheme Powers EV Surge
Launched on September 29, 2024, the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme has been pivotal in accelerating EV adoption. With a financial outlay of ₹10,900 crore, the scheme is operational till March 31, 2026, and aims to bolster the EV manufacturing ecosystem in India. It has subsumed the earlier Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) 2024.

Under PM E-DRIVE, over 10.10 lakh e-2Ws and 1.22 lakh e-3Ws (L5) were registered on the VAHAN portal in FY25. This initiative not only incentivizes EV buyers but also encourages indigenous manufacturing, supports infrastructure development, and strengthens the overall supply chain.

Environmental Gains and Future Potential
The impact of the scheme extends beyond numbers. It has led to fuel savings of approximately 15.77 crore litres and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by over 23 crore kg. On a daily basis, the fuel saving stands at 8.55 lakh litres, while CO₂ reduction reaches 12.48 lakh kg—highlighting the environmental significance of India’s EV transition.

Union Minister for Heavy Industries & Steel, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, praised the milestone, stating, “India is leading the global shift towards sustainable mobility under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi. The achievement of over 1 million EV sales validates the success of our flagship initiatives like FAME, EMPS, and PM E-DRIVE.”

PLI Scheme Driving Domestic Manufacturing
Complementing the EV push, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Auto Scheme is accelerating advanced and sustainable vehicle manufacturing in India. So far, 18 Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have enrolled, playing a vital role in building a future-ready, self-reliant automotive industry.

India’s EV journey continues to gain traction, underpinned by strategic policy frameworks, technological advancements, and a strong commitment to environmental stewardship.
