Leading energy companies and associations are urging the new federal government to prioritize a flexible, decentralized, and consumer-focused approach to Germany’s power supply.

Historically, electricity has flowed from power plants or wind farms directly to customers. However, with millions of solar roofs and other energy generators now feeding into the grid, new opportunities have arisen for consumers. For example, customers can now charge their battery storage or electric vehicles during times of low electricity prices on the exchange, helping to reduce their energy costs.Marc Spieker, Chief Operating Officer Commercial, E.ON SE said, “The flexibility potential of electric vehicles, heat pumps, and battery storage offers our customers a great opportunity to save costs individually through the right products and thus financially benefit from the energy transition. At the same time, the energy transition becomes more affordable for all customers because we can better utilize the existing infrastructure.”

To fully capitalize on this potential and expand the power grid efficiently to meet actual demand, the right policies must be established during the coalition negotiations. This will allow millions of electricity consumers to financially benefit from flexible energy products.

An alliance of E.ON, 1KOMMA5°, Octopus Energy, Schneider Electric, Rabot Energy, along with the Federal Association of New Energy Industries (bne) and the General Association of Housing Industry (GdW), has issued a joint position paper. They are calling for the systematic and cost-effective integration of this vast potential into the energy system by the end of this legislative period. Currently, flexibility issues are not being adequately addressed in the coalition negotiations.
