A recent global survey commissioned by Nissan and conducted by Economist Impact reveals a strong preference for electric vehicles (EVs) among young urban residents, highlighting the increasing role of sustainability in future mobility choices.

The survey, which gathered responses from 3,750 participants across 15 major global cities, underscores the growing shift toward electrification. It found that 57% of young city dwellers are willing to alter their travel habits to reduce their carbon footprint. Interest in EVs is particularly strong in emerging cities, where 44% of respondents expect to drive an electric vehicle within the next five years, compared to 31% in developed cities.

Electrification Gains Momentum

Currently, 23% of young urban residents own an EV, but this figure is expected to rise beyond 35% within the next decade. The findings reflect an urgent push for sustainability, with concerns over pollution and congestion driving demand for cleaner transportation options, especially in cities like Shanghai, São Paulo, and Mexico City.

“The younger generations’ vision for mobility is essential, as their choices will shape the evolving landscape,” said Ritu Bhandari, Asia-Pacific Sustainability lead at Economist Impact. “For sustainable mobility to succeed, cities must balance environmental goals with real commuter priorities such as affordability, convenience, and inclusivity.”

Beyond Mobility: EVs as Energy Solutions

More than 40% of survey respondents expressed enthusiasm for emerging EV technologies, particularly energy storage, alternative fuels, and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) capabilities. Many recognized EVs as not just a mode of transport but a potential energy management tool—capable of powering external devices and storing renewable energy for future use.

As Nissan advances its electrification strategy, the company remains focused on overcoming key challenges such as battery performance, charging infrastructure, and cost. “This survey reaffirms the growing demand for electrification,” said Lavanya Wadgaonkar, Nissan’s Corporate Vice President of Global Communications. “At Nissan, we leverage data-driven research to bridge gaps, ensuring that EV adoption is not just an option, but a core component of the mobility landscape.”

A Future Built on Sustainable Innovation

Nissan continues to expand its EV ecosystem by improving charging networks, enhancing battery technology, and promoting cost-effective EV solutions. By integrating smart charging, battery energy storage innovations, and V2X solutions, the company aims to create a more sustainable and resilient transportation future.

With younger generations leading the charge, the transition to electric mobility is accelerating, shaping a cleaner and more connected future for urban transportation worldwide.
