Volvo Buses has received a significant order from Swedish public transport operator Svealandstrafiken for a total of 106 electric buses. The buses will operate in the counties of Västmanland and Örebro, furthering the transition to sustainable public transportation in the region.
The initial order included 60 Volvo 8900 Electric – marking the first orders for this newly launched intercity model – and 13 Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated city buses. Svealandstrafiken has now placed an additional call-off order for 33 more Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated buses, demonstrating strong confidence in Volvo’s electric mobility solutions.
Expanding Sustainable Public Transport
The Volvo 8900 Electric buses are set to operate in regional traffic, connecting cities in Västmanland and Örebro, with service expected to commence in early 2027. Meanwhile, the Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated buses will be deployed in urban areas of Örebro, with deliveries scheduled for 2026.
Martin Spjern, Market Manager Sweden at Volvo Buses, emphasized the significance of the order: “We are particularly pleased to receive a major order for our new intercity bus, the Volvo 8900 Electric. This will enable us to offer efficient, sustainable, and quiet transportation not just within cities but also between them. For Svealandstrafiken, this order represents a holistic approach, considering social sustainability and service networks as crucial factors in their choice of partner for electrification.”
A Strengthened Partnership
Svealandstrafiken already operates 17 Volvo electric buses on urban routes in Västerås. The continued partnership underscores a shared commitment to innovation and sustainability in public transport.
Geert Schaap, Head of Technology & Innovation at Svealandstrafiken, stated: “We look forward to strengthening our collaboration with Volvo Buses, a company that shares our vision for high-quality, innovative, and environmentally friendly public transport solutions.”
Next-Generation Electric Buses
The Volvo 8900 Electric is built on Volvo’s BZR electromobility platform, allowing flexible battery configurations to suit different operational needs. Combined with the Volvo 7900 Electric city bus, Volvo now offers a complete range of electric public transport solutions, catering to urban, intercity, and commuter routes across Europe.
Inside the buses, a redesigned driver’s environment was a key factor in Svealandstrafiken’s decision. The dynamic instrument cluster, with intuitively placed controls, enhances driver focus and passenger safety.
Production and Strategic Partnerships
The chassis for the Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated and Volvo 8900 Electric will be produced at Volvo Buses’ facilities in Borås and Uddevalla, Sweden, while the bus bodies will be manufactured at MCV, Volvo’s partner in Egypt. To support production, a new manufacturing facility is being built specifically for Volvo’s complete electric buses.
Thomas Nylund, Vice President, Cluster Europe, Volvo Buses, highlighted the company’s strategic vision: “This major order from Svealandstrafiken validates our strategic shift in Europe. Together with our partners, we will continue to develop cutting-edge public transport solutions while leveraging external collaborations to customize offerings for different markets and customers.”
Driving the Future of Electric Mobility
The demand for electric buses is rapidly growing across Europe, with cities and regions striving for greener, quieter, and more efficient transport solutions. With this latest order, Volvo Buses reinforces its position as a leader in electromobility, helping to shape the future of sustainable public transportation in Sweden and beyond.
