Volvo Cars has introduced its latest fully electric model, the ES90, a revolutionary vehicle featuring cutting-edge 800-volt technology that significantly enhances charging speed, driving range, and efficiency.
The Volvo ES90 sets a new benchmark for the brand’s electric lineup, capable of adding up to 300 kilometres of range in just 10 minutes using a 350 kW fast charger. With a maximum driving range of 700 kilometres (WLTP cycle), the ES90 is designed to offer customers an extended, stress-free driving experience.
800V System: Faster Charging, Greater Efficiency
The transition from a 400V to an 800V architecture allows the ES90 to deliver more power with the same current while generating less heat, ensuring faster and safer charging. The new system also incorporates lighter e-motors and components, reducing vehicle weight and further improving efficiency and performance.
Additionally, the in-house developed battery management software optimizes the charging experience, cutting the time required to charge the battery from 10% to 80% by 30%, reducing it to just 20 minutes. This enhancement is made possible through adaptive charging software from Breathe Battery Technologies, a startup Volvo invested in through its Tech Fund.
A Sustainable Approach
Beyond technological advancements, the ES90 champions sustainability with a significant use of recycled and natural materials. The vehicle incorporates 29% recycled aluminum, 18% recycled steel, and 16% recycled polymers and bio-based materials. Interior wood panels are sourced from FSC-certified wood, aligning with Volvo’s commitment to reducing CO₂ emissions during production.
Additionally, Volvo introduces a battery passport powered by blockchain technology, ensuring traceability of raw materials like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite used in the battery. This initiative enhances transparency regarding the ethical sourcing of battery materials.
Commenting on the breakthrough, Anders Bell, Volvo’s Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, said, “Our 800V technology marks another significant technological upgrade for our customers as we move towards full electrification. It makes our electric cars even more efficient, helps you charge your electric Volvo faster, and go further on a single charge.”
With the ES90, Volvo continues its push towards full electrification, offering a vehicle that charges faster, drives longer, and is built with sustainability at its core. The ES90 is expected to reinforce Volvo’s position as a leader in premium electric mobility, setting a new standard in the EV market.
