A consortium led by E.ON has been awarded €45 million in European Union funding to enhance electric vehicle charging infrastructure across Europe. The DRIVE-E project, one of 39 innovative initiatives selected by the EU, will establish 1,400 new public charging points by 2027, including 430 high-capacity chargers for heavy commercial vehicles (350 kW or more).

This project, set to roll out across 13 EU countries, aims to support the electrification of both passenger and freight transport. E.ON, along with partners ZSE and Eldrive, will create a network of charging stations along key trans-European freight routes, including dedicated sites for trucks and mixed-use locations for both trucks and cars. The initiative also addresses gaps in charging infrastructure for light commercial vehicles.

The new charging points will be located at over 250 sites across Germany, Austria, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, and Slovakia. The project is co-funded by the EU through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) II, part of the EU’s broader effort to build a sustainable and efficient transport network. The second phase of the AFIF, launched in February 2024, has a total budget of €1 billion.
