LG Energy Solution has launched a groundbreaking battery management system (BMS) diagnostic solution, powered by a system-on-chip (SoC) technology in collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. The new software, integrated into the Snapdragon® Digital Chassis™, sets a benchmark for electric vehicle (EV) energy management, offering unparalleled safety and efficiency diagnostics.
The two companies have signed a joint promotion agreement to accelerate the commercialization of these advanced solutions. This milestone follows their earlier announcement of a technical consortium to develop next-generation BMS diagnostic technologies.
LG Energy Solution’s advanced BMS leverages Snapdragon® Car-to-Cloud Connected Services Platform to provide automakers with enhanced diagnostic capabilities for human-machine interfaces (HMI) and cloud services.
“Through technology sharing and validation with Qualcomm Technologies, we have demonstrated the excellence of our BMS technology. Now, we are officially embarking on the development for commercialization,” said an LG Energy Solution spokesperson.
First-Ever High-Performance SoC-Based BMS
Unlike traditional BMS systems operating on low-spec hardware, LG Energy Solution’s innovation harnesses high-performance SoC computing power. Key features include advanced safety diagnostics, degradation and lifespan prediction capabilities, and the ability to analyze data in real-time without external server dependency.
The system enhances thermal incident detection accuracy by leveraging increased computational capacity, which enables detailed analyses of battery components such as the anode and cathode. It also predicts residual battery capacity, helping extend the lifespan of EV batteries.
The diagnostic solution’s computing power is 80 times greater than conventional systems, facilitating complex algorithms previously unattainable in the industry.
A Strategic Step into Software and Services
This development aligns with LG Energy Solution’s recently announced strategic goal to expand into software and services. The company introduced its new brand, ‘B.around,’ offering a suite of cloud and AI-integrated solutions for safety diagnostics and software-defined vehicles (SDVs).
With over two decades of expertise in BMS design and more than 8,000 patents, LG Energy Solution boasts industry-leading metrics, including a 90% safety diagnostic detection rate and a 1% error rate in degradation diagnostics.
David Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution, highlighted the significance of this milestone, stating, “Opening the market for the industry’s first SoC-based BMS with Qualcomm Technologies is a meaningful step for the EV era. Many EVs will soon benefit from the differentiated value provided by our B.around brand.”
Echoing the sentiment, O.H. Kwon, Qualcomm’s senior vice president and president of APAC, remarked, “This collaboration underscores our commitment to revolutionizing energy management in EVs, achieving optimal safety and efficiency through innovation.”
This pioneering BMS solution marks a significant advancement in EV battery technology, promising to redefine energy utilization and management in the automotive industry.
