Mercedes-Benz is enhancing its MBUX Voice Assistant with a powerful new general knowledge feature powered by artificial intelligence (AI). By integrating Microsoft Bing and ChatGPT through Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, the system can provide up-to-date answers to knowledge-based questions in natural language. After debuting ChatGPT in a US-beta program last year, Mercedes-Benz is now rolling out this advanced functionality in series-production vehicles for the first time.
With this upgrade, users can ask a wide range of general knowledge questions—spanning pop culture, science, health, history, and more—and engage in conversational follow-ups. The system’s context-aware capabilities allow it to understand vague queries or additional requests. For instance, after asking about an artist’s Grammy awards, users can follow up with “When was the first?” to receive accurate, contextual responses. In addition to general knowledge, the MBUX Voice Assistant retains its utility for everyday topics like weather, news, stock updates, and sports scores, making it a versatile companion on the road. Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑Benz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer, Development & Procurement, said, “By adding an AI-driven knowledge feature to our MBUX Voice Assistant, we are making it even easier for customers to connect with their vehicle in an entertaining and rewarding way. Our unique AI software seamlessly interacts with ChatGPT and Bing through Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service to deliver information like never before. This is another proof point on our journey towards the hyper-personalised in-car user experience.”
