The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has taken a significant step to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption in India with the launch of the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) scheme. Announced on September 29, 2024, the scheme aims to enhance EV adoption, establish robust charging infrastructure, and strengthen the EV manufacturing ecosystem. The initiative is backed by a budget allocation of ₹10,900 crore over two years, including ₹2,000 crore earmarked for setting up Electric Vehicle Public Charging Stations (EVPCS).

EV Charging Infrastructure Development

The Ministry of Power (MoP) has also issued comprehensive guidelines for the installation and operation of EV charging infrastructure. Released on September 17, 2024, the guidelines emphasize creating a connected and interoperable EV charging network across India.

According to MoP data, 25,202 EVPCS have been installed nationwide, with Karnataka leading the count at 5,765 stations, followed by Maharashtra (3,728) and Uttar Pradesh (1,989). In Chhattisgarh, 271 EVPCS have been established, with Raipur accounting for the highest share at 57 stations.

Dynamic EV Charging Needs

The NITI Aayog has noted that the requirement for EV charging infrastructure depends on various factors, including the composition of electric vehicles, travel patterns, terrain, urbanization, and technological advancements in EVs and charging equipment. As these factors are still evolving globally, there is no consensus on the precise number of charging points needed for a specific EV population.

Minister’s Statement

Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Steel Shri Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma shared this information in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. He highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to support EV adoption and the development of charging infrastructure.
