Hyundai Motor Group has announced a groundbreaking partnership with three premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)—IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras—to establish a collaborative research framework focused on batteries and electrification. This initiative aims to revolutionize the development of electric vehicle (EV) technologies tailored for the Indian market.

The partnership’s centerpiece, the Hyundai Center of Excellence (CoE), will be established at IIT Delhi and will operate with sponsorships from Hyundai Motor Group. The CoE will spearhead advancements in battery technology and electrification while also fostering talent development and academic-industrial cooperation.

A Vision for India-Specific Innovations
At a formal ceremony at IIT Delhi, attended by Hyundai Motor Group officials and representatives from the three IITs, an agreement was signed to inaugurate the Hyundai Motor Group-IIT Hyundai CoE.’ Speaking at the event, Naksup Sung, Head of Hyundai Motor Group’s R&D Planning & Coordination Center, expressed optimism about the collaboration.

“We are delighted to join forces with IITs, renowned globally for their outstanding research capabilities. The Hyundai CoE will be instrumental in nurturing India’s academic talent and driving innovation, contributing significantly to the future of mobility,” he said.

Investment and Research Goals
Hyundai Motor Group plans to invest USD 7 million over five years (2025-2029) to conduct research in battery technology, electrification, and future technologies, including software and hydrogen fuel cells. The collaboration will also involve IIT Delhi’s Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART), India’s only dedicated EV research institute.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Developing India-specific battery solutions and electrification technologies.
  • Strengthening the EV ecosystem in line with Indian government policies for EV adoption.
  • Expanding into emerging fields like hydrogen fuel cells and advanced automotive software.

Fostering Talent and Collaboration
The Hyundai CoE will facilitate technical and human exchanges between experts from Korea and India through training programs, specialized lectures, and research initiatives. The Group plans to promote mid- to long-term employment opportunities for Indian talent, further integrating academic expertise with industry needs.

Hyundai’s Commitment to India
This initiative aligns with Hyundai Motor Group’s strategic expansion in India, following the successful IPO of Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL). By investing in cutting-edge research and fostering local talent, Hyundai aims to contribute to India’s EV ecosystem and develop advanced technologies tailored to the region’s unique challenges.

The Hyundai CoE is poised to become a beacon of innovation, strengthening India’s position as a hub for next-generation mobility solutions.
