After 94 years of providing vehicles to the Vatican and 45 years of producing the iconic “Popemobile” based on the G-Class, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its first all-electric Popemobile. Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius and the design team personally delivered the handcrafted electric vehicle to Pope Francis at the Vatican.
The vehicle, customized for the Pope’s unique requirements, features an electric drivetrain tailored for slow speeds during public appearances. Its design aligns with the principles of sustainability outlined in Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si, which emphasizes the need for ecological responsibility.
The electric Popemobile will be prominently used during the 2025 Jubilee, a once-in-25-years event that will draw millions of pilgrims to Rome. This innovation underscores Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to emission-free mobility and sustainability. Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, said,“With the new Popemobile, Pope Francis is the first pope to be travelling in a fully electric Mercedes-Benz when making public appearances. This is a special honour for our company, and I would like to thank His Holiness for his trust. With this Popemobile, we are also sending out a clear call for electromobility and decarbonisation. Mercedes-Benz not only stands for the special and individual – but also for consistently creating the conditions for a net-carbon-neutral[1] new car fleet in 2039.”
