LG Energy Solution and General Motors (GM) have announced a groundbreaking partnership to jointly develop prismatic battery cell technology, marking a new chapter in their 14-year collaboration on battery innovations.
This agreement represents a pivotal milestone for LG Energy Solution as it becomes the first global battery manufacturer to offer all three major cell form factors: pouch, cylindrical, and prismatic. The advanced prismatic cell technology will power future GM electric vehicles (EVs), further solidifying the automaker’s position in the rapidly evolving EV market.
Prismatic cells, known for their flat, rectangular shape and efficient space utilization, are increasingly favored for their modular design benefits. LG Energy Solution brings a wealth of experience to the table, boasting an extensive patent portfolio and advanced stacking technology, which has emerged as a manufacturing standard in prismatic cell production.

This move builds on the success of our Ultium Cells joint venture and underscores our shared commitment to driving the EV revolution.”
The Ultium Cells partnership between GM and LG Energy Solution has already led to the creation of thousands of U.S. jobs, with operational plants in Ohio and Tennessee. The introduction of prismatic battery technology further strengthens their combined efforts to produce cutting-edge batteries and support the mass adoption of EVs worldwide.
