In the fiscal year 2024-25, India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector saw a substantial rise, leading to noticeable changes in the country’s electricity consumption. Data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) shows that in September 2024 alone, EVs consumed 66.26 million units of electricity, highlighting the increasing presence of EVs on Indian roads. This shift emphasizes the growing influence of electric mobility on the nation’s power grid and the readiness of India’s electricity distribution companies to support this transition.

A key contributor to this rise was Tata Power-Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL), which supplied 20.30% of the electricity used by EVs nationwide. Delhi, served by Tata Power-DDL, has been proactive in establishing EV charging infrastructure, making it one of the leading regions in EV adoption. Other important players in Delhi include BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL), which, together with Tata Power-DDL, are crucial to supporting EV growth in the capital.

Maharashtra is another region making substantial strides in the EV space. Major power distributors like MSEDCL and the Brihan Mumbai Electric Supply Company (BEST) have also played significant roles. These companies, along with Delhi’s major distributors, contributed to 44.14 million units of electricity consumption by EVs in September 2024, accounting for a combined 66.59% of the total power used by EVs nationwide. This statistic demonstrates that urban regions such as Delhi and Maharashtra are leading the way in the EV revolution due to their robust charging networks and supportive policies.

The top ten electricity distribution companies in India collectively supplied 84.18% of the electricity consumed by EVs, signaling the crucial role of established energy providers in this transition. This concentration suggests that major players in the energy sector are essential for driving the shift towards electric vehicles, with a focus on expanding sustainable and efficient charging infrastructure.

Beyond Delhi and Maharashtra, states like Gujarat are witnessing a rise in EV usage, contributing to increased electricity demand. This is largely due to government initiatives promoting cleaner transportation and enhanced charging facilities. Additionally, other states such as Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Assam, Telangana, and Kerala have also reported noticeable growth in electricity consumption by EVs, reflecting a nationwide commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
