Volvo Buses has unveiled its latest advancements in sustainable transport with the launch of the Volvo 8900 Electric and a refreshed version of the Volvo 7900 Electric, including its articulated variant. This move positions Volvo as a frontrunner in offering versatile electric solutions for both urban and intercity transport.

Thomas Nylund, Head of Volvo Buses Europe, explained the company’s ambitious plans during the launch event.

Comprehensive Solutions for Diverse Transport Needs

With the new Volvo 8900 Electric, Volvo expands into the commuter bus segment, enabling cities and regions to electrify routes previously dominated by diesel buses. In parallel, the Volvo 7900 Electric and its articulated counterpart have received significant upgrades, including a modernized front design, an innovative driver environment featuring a dynamic instrument cluster, and Volvo’s latest active safety systems.

“This broader city offer allows us to provide electric solutions suitable for all conditions and climates,” said Nylund. “Many European cities have advanced in city traffic electrification, and commuter and intercity buses are the next logical step.”

Flexibility and Customer-Centric Design

Volvo’s updated lineup emphasizes flexibility, with platforms tailored to various needs. “Our extensive experience in electrification ensures that customers receive complete, optimized solutions,” Nylund said. He highlighted Volvo’s commitment to strong customer relationships, supported by a robust service network.

New Business Model and Strategic Partnerships

Starting next year, Volvo’s complete buses, including the Volvo 8900 Electric and 7900 Electric, will be manufactured in partnership with MCV. This collaboration enables Volvo to offer a broader and more customizable product range.

“MCV will adhere to Volvo’s stringent quality standards and build the first Volvo 7900 Electric at its new industrial facility by early 2025,” Nylund shared.

Expanding Horizons for Coaches

Volvo’s coach segment remains robust, with collaborations involving manufacturers like Carrus Delta in Finland. Nylund also revealed plans to leverage the BZR platform for electric coaches, designed for shorter cruise tours and intercity routes, catering to a growing demand for comfortable, sustainable travel options.

Pioneering Sustainable Mobility

As Volvo Buses continues to innovate, Nylund hinted at further developments in the pipeline. “The Volvo 8900 Electric is just the beginning of what the BZR platform can achieve. An electric coach is the natural next step.”

Volvo Buses’ commitment to sustainability and innovation underscores its mission to shape the future of public transport while addressing evolving urban and regional mobility needs.
