Volvo Buses has unveiled a comprehensive offering to accelerate the electrification of city and intercity transport in Europe. The highlight of this launch is the Volvo 8900 Electric, a low-entry bus designed to electrify commuter transport while handling diverse conditions and climates. This marks a significant expansion of Volvo’s portfolio, which already includes the updated Volvo 7900 Electric and Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated buses, now featuring advanced safety systems and a redesigned driver environment.
Electrification for Broader Applications
The Volvo 8900 Electric caters to a growing demand for electric solutions in city traffic and commuter transport. “Cities and regions across Europe are advancing in electrification, and intercity buses are the natural next step,” said Thomas Nylund, responsible for Volvo Buses’ European market. “With the Volvo 7900 Electric range and the new 8900 Electric, we meet the demand for both low-floor and low-entry applications.”
Enhanced Features and Safety
The revamped Volvo 7900 Electric and its articulated variant now sport a refreshed front design, a state-of-the-art driver’s instrument cluster, and Volvo’s latest active safety systems. This blend of design and technology underscores Volvo’s commitment to offering comfortable and safe mobility solutions.
New Manufacturing Collaboration
Starting 2025, Volvo’s electric buses will be produced in partnership with MCV (Manufacturing Commercial Vehicles), ensuring high-quality standards and enhanced production flexibility. “MCV will use the same technical body solutions our customers trust. This collaboration enables us to focus on developing advanced drivelines and chassis while offering a broader, tailored product portfolio,” Nylund added.
Expanding Coach Solutions
Volvo Buses also reaffirmed its commitment to the coach segment, leveraging its global platform and partnerships with body manufacturers like Carrus Delta in Finland. This strategy provides a wide range of single and double-decker solutions for intercity and tourist transport.
Future Electric Innovations
The new Volvo 8900 Electric is built on the Volvo BZR platform, which is set to support future electric coach designs. “Our next step will be an electric coach for intercity travel and shorter trips, combining sustainability with passenger comfort,” revealed Nylund.
Towards a Greener Future
Volvo Buses’ expanded lineup and strategic collaborations reinforce its position as a leader in sustainable transportation, offering cities and regions across Europe flexible and innovative solutions for a greener future.
