LG Energy Solution has announced a significant new supply agreement with Rivian, a U.S.-based electric vehicle manufacturer. Under this deal, LG Energy Solution will provide Rivian with its next-generation 4695 cylindrical batteries for the next five years, totaling 67GWh.
The 4695 cylindrical battery, which has a diameter of 46mm and a height of 95mm, offers more than six times the capacity of the previously used 2170 cylindrical batteries. This larger size allows for higher energy density, greater space efficiency, and improved safety, making it an attractive solution for the rapidly growing electric vehicle market.
Production of these advanced batteries will begin at LG Energy Solution’s Arizona plant within the first year, with the batteries being delivered to Rivian’s Normal, Illinois facility. The batteries will power Rivian’s R2 model, targeted for the North American market.
David Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution, highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating, “This large-scale order from Rivian for 4695 batteries marks a key milestone for LG Energy Solution in expanding its client base within the cylindrical battery segment.” This collaboration also supports LG Energy Solution’s strategic goal to strengthen its position in the U.S. market and continue its leadership in the battery industry.
