Hyundai Motor Unveils Next Step in its Hydrogen Legacy with new INITIUM FCEV Concept

Hyundai Motor Company today introduced its latest hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) concept, INITIUM, at the ‘Clearly Committed’ event held at Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang. Derived from Latin, INITIUM signifies “beginning” or “first,” symbolizing Hyundai’s pioneering role in hydrogen energy and its dedication to a sustainable hydrogen society.

The INITIUM concept previews a production-ready FCEV expected to launch next year, showcasing Hyundai’s 27 years of hydrogen innovation. “Our commitment to hydrogen is rooted in its potential as a clean and fair energy source,” said Hyundai President and CEO Jaehoon Chang. “We envision a future where hydrogen powers everything for everyone, everywhere.”

Hyundai’s HTWO brand, launched earlier this year, represents an end-to-end hydrogen energy solution, termed the HTWO Grid, encompassing hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and utilization. Executive Chair Euisun Chung emphasized the company’s mission to lead in the hydrogen society, asserting, “The shift to hydrogen energy is for future generations.”

Hyundai’s legacy of hydrogen innovation began with its ambitious Mercury and Polaris Projects in the early 2000s, advancing hydrogen fuel cell technology and establishing the Mabuk Environmental Technology R&D Center in 2005. Under the visionary leadership of Honorary Chairman Mong-Koo Chung, Hyundai made history as the first automaker to mass-produce hydrogen FCEVs, debuting its dedicated model in 2018.

The INITIUM concept highlights Hyundai’s enduring commitment to hydrogen-powered mobility and a sustainable future.
