General Motors has entered into a long-term partnership with Barclays U.S. Consumer Bank, naming Barclays the exclusive issuer of the GM Rewards Mastercard and the GM Business Mastercard in the United States, beginning in the summer of 2025. This strategic alliance aims to deliver enhanced rewards and exclusive experiences for cardmembers while further solidifying GM’s market leadership in customer loyalty.
With the largest customer base of any automaker in the U.S., GM has been a leader in customer loyalty for nine consecutive years, according to S&P Global Mobility. The GM credit card program, launched in 1992, has become one of the nation’s most enduring co-branded credit card offerings, serving millions of customers who earn rewards redeemable for new Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC vehicles, as well as services and accessories.
“Our goal is to make the GM Rewards Mastercard a card that consumers will love to use because of the reward value and unique experiences only GM can deliver,” said Paul Jacobson, GM Executive Vice President and CFO. “We’re excited to partner with Barclays, whose expertise will help us elevate the program and create new opportunities to reward our loyal customers, especially as we continue to grow in the electric vehicle market.”
Barclays will assume responsibility for issuing the GM card portfolio, including acquiring receivables from the current issuer. The partnership also aligns with Barclays’ growth strategy to expand its presence in the U.S. partner card market through alliances with iconic American brands.
“Barclays is thrilled to partner with General Motors, a brand that has defined America’s love for automobiles for over a century,” said Denny Nealon, CEO of Barclays US Consumer Bank. “We look forward to helping GM create an industry-leading credit card product that delivers new value for customers and drives successful business outcomes.”
The GM Rewards program allows cardmembers to earn and redeem points for GM’s lineup, including its expanding portfolio of electric vehicles. The upcoming relaunch is set to introduce exclusive cardmember opportunities, ensuring that GM Rewards cardholders continue to benefit from the program’s high-value rewards.
Current My GM Rewards cardholders will continue to earn points and use their existing cards until the transition to the new Barclays-issued cards is complete. Detailed instructions for activating the new GM cards will be provided to cardmembers before the switch. The GM Rewards Mastercard will continue to operate under the Mastercard network, offering a suite of additional cardmember benefits.
General Motors is at the forefront of building a sustainable transportation future, leveraging cutting-edge technology to produce safer, smarter, and lower-emission vehicles. The company’s brands, including Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC, offer a wide range of innovative gas-powered vehicles as well as the industry’s most comprehensive lineup of electric vehicles, driving towards an all-electric future.
