JSW MG Motor India has announced the launch of India’s first high-voltage (HV) second-life battery featuring a homegrown Battery Management System (BMS) as part of ‘Project Revive.’ The innovative product, developed in collaboration with Vision Mechatronics, was showcased at The Battery Show held from October 3-5, 2024, at the India Expo Mart, Greater Noida.

This marks JSW MG Motor India’s third pilot project focused on second-life battery applications, underscoring the company’s commitment to promoting a circular economy and creating a sustainable electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem. The repurposed EV battery will initially be deployed as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) backup solution for an industrial facility in Pune, highlighting the versatility of second-life batteries in large-scale energy storage.

Vision Mechatronics, a leading Indian technology firm specializing in second-life battery solutions, played a key role in the project’s development. The battery is equipped with an indigenous BMS, specifically designed for industrial applications, offering advanced monitoring systems and safety measures, including protections against thermal runaway.

Gaurav Gupta, Chief Growth Officer at JSW MG Motor India, said, “Our partnership with Vision Mechatronics exemplifies our focus on bringing circularity to EV batteries by giving them a second life for large-scale industrial use. The launch of India’s first high-voltage second-life battery with an indigenous BMS is an innovation that makes us future-ready.”

Dr. Rashi Gupta, Managing Director of Vision Mechatronics, added, “ReLive, developed in partnership with JSW MG Motor India, is India’s first high-voltage repurposed battery with a homegrown active balancing BMS. This solution adheres to the highest safety standards, offering a sustainable and cost-effective energy storage alternative for industrial applications.”

JSW MG Motor India has previously launched several initiatives under ‘Project Revive,’ including partnerships with BATX and IIT Delhi for a 100% off-grid charging station and with Lohum and TERI to deploy a 5kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Nainital. These efforts highlight the company’s ongoing work to drive innovation in sustainable mobility and support India’s transition to clean energy solutions.
