General Motors (GM) is rolling out significant updates to its privacy practices, consolidating multiple U.S. privacy statements into a single, simplified document. In an effort to increase transparency and provide easier access to privacy controls, GM’s new approach is designed to help customers better understand and manage how their personal data is used across GM’s connected services and platforms.

Under the leadership of GM’s new Chief Trust and Privacy Officer, Alisa Bergman, the revised privacy statement integrates the policies for GM, OnStar, vehicle mobile apps (myCadillac, myChevrolet, myBuick, myGMC), CarBravo, and Future Roads into one user-friendly document. The new statement is written with simpler language and includes enhanced sections on connected data, including how GM handles information such as geolocation, driving behavior, and in-vehicle camera data.

The update also emphasizes customer control, highlighting tools that allow users to delete personal data stored in their vehicles and, for newer models, limit access to location information. GM stresses that these changes do not allow the company to collect new categories of data or share personal information with new parties; instead, they are designed to make privacy information easier to find and navigate.

GM has also improved the OnStar enrollment process by adding more detailed information in customer emails, including links to the privacy statement and user terms, along with instructions for managing account preferences.

“These enhancements to both GM’s privacy statement and its practices will help drivers make thoughtful decisions about uses of their personal information,” said Jules Polonetsky, CEO of the Future of Privacy Forum, which consulted with GM on these updates.

GM remains committed to continuously improving its privacy practices, ensuring that its customers can trust how their data is handled while enjoying the full benefits of connected vehicle technologies.
