In the fiscal year 2024-25, India saw a significant rise in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), which had a noticeable impact on the country’s electricity consumption patterns. Data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) shows that in June 2024 alone, EVs consumed 64.49 million units of electricity, indicating the growing presence of EVs on Indian roads.

One of the leading regions in this shift was the area served by Tata Power-Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL), which played a major role in supporting EV charging infrastructure. Tata Power-DDL accounted for 22.52% of the total electricity consumed by EVs across the country. This showcases the proactive approach of Delhi in promoting electric vehicles.

In Maharashtra, significant contributions came from other major distribution companies, including BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL), and Brihan Mumbai Electric Supply Company (BEST). These companies together accounted for 32.13 million units of electricity consumed by EVs in June 2024. This highlights the importance of urban areas like Delhi and Maharashtra in leading the EV revolution.

Delhi, in particular, has shown a strong commitment to EV adoption. BRPL, Tata Power-DDL, and BYPL have all contributed to the growth of EV charging infrastructure. The combined efforts of these distribution companies in Delhi and Maharashtra resulted in a 72.33% share of the total electricity consumed by EVs across the nation.

Looking at the broader picture, the top ten distribution companies in India collectively accounted for 87.49% of the total electricity consumed by EVs. This shows that key players in the energy sector are driving the shift towards electric vehicles and promoting sustainable transportation.

The monthly increase in EV usage is also boosting electricity consumption, especially in states like Delhi, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. These states have seen rapid growth in EV adoption due to supportive government policies and improved charging infrastructure. Other states such as Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, and Kerala have also experienced significant growth in electricity consumption by EVs, showing their commitment to environmentally friendly transportation.

The data from 2024-25 highlights the impact of electric vehicles on India’s energy sector. Key distribution companies and states have been essential in advancing the transition to cleaner and more sustainable transportation. Continued investment and policy support will be crucial in speeding up EV adoption and reducing the environmental effects of conventional fuel-powered vehicles.
