Nissan marks the 40th anniversary of its iconic performance division, Nissan Motorsport International Co. Limited, better known as NISMO. Established on September 17, 1984, NISMO has been the driving force behind some of Nissan’s most exhilarating vehicles and motorsports achievements, serving as a symbol of the brand’s commitment to performance both on the racetrack and on public roads.
Originally based in Omori, Tokyo, NISMO has long embodied its ethos of “Track to Road,” translating innovations and learnings from high-pressure motorsports environments into enhanced performance for everyday road cars. To commemorate this milestone, Nissan has launched a special exhibition at its Global Headquarters Gallery in Yokohama, showcasing a blend of NISMO’s past, present, and future.
Visitors can marvel at rare road models like the ultra-rare NISMO 270R and the legendary NISMO 400R, alongside track icons such as the Nissan R390 GT1, which secured a podium finish at the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Calsonic Skyline GT-R Group A, a mainstay of Japan Touring Car Championship (JTCC) racing. Also on display are vehicles from NISMO’s current Japan domestic line-up, including the newly launched Ariya NISMO, AURA NISMO, and FAIRLADY Z NISMO.
The exhibition will run until October 15, 2024.
Takao Katagiri, head of Nissan’s global motorsports business unit and president of NISMO, expressed gratitude to fans and customers, saying, “We would like to thank everyone who has supported NISMO since 1984. Our long-standing ethos of ‘track to road’ continues to drive our Super GT and Formula E factory racing programs, and we aim to deliver more exhilarating NISMO models for customers around the world.”
Looking ahead, Nissan plans to expand NISMO’s presence globally, bringing its racing expertise to more consumers through enhanced vehicle offerings.
The 40th-anniversary celebrations will culminate at the 2024 NISMO Festival, set for December 1 at Fuji International Speedway in Shizuoka Prefecture. The event will pay homage to NISMO’s rich heritage, racing triumphs, and the evolution of its high-performance road cars. Fans can look forward to a day of excitement as NISMO’s legacy continues to evolve.
