In a major move to address the growing demand for electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, EVgo Inc. (NASDAQ: EVGO), one of the nation’s largest public fast charging networks, and General Motors (GM) have announced an expansion of their collaboration to deploy 400 fast charging stalls at flagship locations in key metropolitan areas across the United States.

The new flagship stations will feature state-of-the-art 350kW fast chargers, pull-through stations, ample lighting, canopies, and security cameras, aiming to provide EV drivers with a more convenient, reliable, and customer-friendly charging experience. These stations are set to become critical hubs for EV charging, accommodating up to 20 stalls at most locations, with select sites featuring even higher stall counts. Locations will be strategically chosen in high-traffic areas such as Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New York, and Texas, offering amenities like shopping, dining, and coffee shops nearby for drivers to enjoy while charging.

“The future of EV charging is larger stall count locations, high-power charging, and designing around features that customers love – such as pull-through access, canopies, and convenient amenities,” said Dennis Kish, President of EVgo. “Through this next evolution of EVgo and GM’s esteemed collaboration, the future of EV charging is here.”

The first flagship location is expected to open in 2025, with stations designed to be modular, allowing for future expansion and faster construction using prefabricated components. The flagship stations will be co-branded by EVgo and GM Energy, continuing the two companies’ efforts to lead the market in customer-centric charging solutions.

GM Energy Vice President Wade Sheffer emphasized the importance of ensuring reliable and accessible charging for EV owners. “Through our collaborations with industry leaders like EVgo, we continue to innovate and expand customer-centric charging solutions that will meet the evolving needs of EV drivers across the country,” said Sheffer.

This expansion builds on the companies’ earlier collaboration to construct 2,850 DC fast charging stalls in metropolitan areas, with 1,000 already installed as of August 2023 and a target of 2,000 by the end of 2024. The additional flagship locations represent a strategic shift, reallocating funds to enhance premium charging experiences for a rapidly growing EV customer base.
