At the 2024 Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (IISF) held at the Jakarta Convention Center, PT PLN (Persero) signed two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) to advance electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. The MoUs, formalized during a panel discussion on strategies for accelerating EV infrastructure in Indonesia, mark PLN’s commitment to expanding the EV ecosystem in the country.
The first agreement is with PT Utomo Charge+ Indonesia for the development of centralized EV charging infrastructure, while the second involves ACME Corporation for establishing Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLUs). This collaboration includes knowledge sharing, research, and development.
Ferry Triansyah, Coordinator of Electricity Business Services at the Directorate General of Electricity, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), emphasized the critical role of infrastructure in encouraging the shift from conventional vehicles to EVs. He highlighted the government’s commitment through Presidential Regulation Number 79 of 2023, which supports EV adoption by providing incentives and enhancing infrastructure.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo reaffirmed PLN’s support for the government’s efforts to promote EVs as a key component of Indonesia’s energy transition roadmap toward Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060. He noted PLN’s ongoing efforts to expand EV charging infrastructure to facilitate the growing number of electric vehicles.
PLN’s Director of Corporate Planning and Business Development, Hartanto Wibowo, reported significant progress, with over 130,000 EVs in use as of April 2024, reflecting a 180% increase from 2022. As of August 2024, PLN has established 2,015 SPKLUs and 2,182 Public Electric Vehicle Battery Exchange Stations (SPBKLU) across Indonesia. The Home Charging service has also seen substantial growth, with users increasing from 118 in 2021 to 18,000.
PLN has integrated these infrastructures into the EV Digital Services (EVDS) feature of the PLN Mobile application, enabling users to locate SPKLUs and SPBKLU, apply for Home Charging installations, and purchase EVs.
Hartanto mentioned that the digitalization of the EV ecosystem resulted from strategic partnerships between PLN and various EV manufacturers. PLN remains dedicated to supporting the government’s energy transition targets and enhancing national energy security.
Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) President Director Toto Nugroho, who participated in the panel discussion, commended PLN’s role as a major EV infrastructure provider. He expressed confidence in Indonesia’s potential to become a significant player in the global EV market.
